It got a little confusing when there were simultaneous issues concerning the complex, and its biochemical warfare-researching creation, and the virus itself. Ruth Leavitt was a fun character, even if she became a little too curmudgeony after a while. The best part of the film was the subterranean, multi-layered complex in the Nevadan desert and other space-agey outfits, colors, and science therein. The flyover over the infected town and the search thereafter was chilling, even if there was a deadpan "Look at his buttocks." ‘That's not funny." Line was laugh-out-loud funny, and I don't think it was meant to be. An unknown, untraceable virus of some kind has (almost) completely wiped out a small town in New Mexico. While I can appreciate some of the cool practical effects and split-screen shots, there was too much science-talk and not enough danger - it was marketed as a "thriller" after all.

Yeah it blurs the line between science and reality although Robert Wise's direction is smooth, it's intelligent, and scary with its sense of paranoia.Ī science fiction film for the sci-fi fan, and no one else, I don't think Michael Crichton, the author of the novel with the same name, would've minded that. Not to mention it played a central role in the construction of new and contested futures for molecular biology.

The science of the movie is enough to make up for lack of character. What do we do if another biological crisis happens again is the big question? A deadly outbreak will always exist in one form or another either we are ready or totally unprepared.Ī majority of this takes place in an underground facility but watching these people break down the mechanics of this unknown disease is fascinating. There's statements about germ warfare, biological weapons, discovery of new interworkings of contagions, and determining the correct actions to combat sickness. With this movie the politicians would resort to bombing the virus out of existence. It's true too that we don't know everything about how a disease works as it constantly mutates and adapts to defend itself. The film itself continues to offer context for considerable futures for us. It's interesting too that the several safety measures they take have to be precise to avoid risk of infection or contamination.

They're even surprised to find that only do the victims' blood turns to powder form but a still alive infant has been found next to an elderly man.īut in the event the biohazard escapes the facility they operate in has a self destruct mechanism they can only activate.īy today's standards this fits our current fear of facing an epidemic matching COVID-19 as this outbreak comes out of nowhere and no one can quite identify it. Hutton have been recruited to Project Scoop. It's origins appear extraterrestrial but can they contain it before it spreads? Dr. Scientists can't make out what it is exactly but it appears to be growing more and more. The town's population has already succumbed to it like wildfire. The fear of an unknown virus lands on earth in Arizona from a satellite that falls from above. Even though some of the technology has been superseded it's even more enjoyable the second time around, and the Universal DVD remastered edition, looks and sounds terrific.ĭirector Robert Wise adapts the best selling book by Michael Crichton. No foolish monsters, no egotistical glamorous stars to foul up the seriousness of superior storytelling. If you're only looking for action, don't look here.

Great performances by a non-glamorous, handpicked cast of professional performers - ensure an edge of the seat journey to those who enjoy intelligent, near-documentary style movie making. That's a strong & timely message from a 50 yr old Sci-Fi story. No one nation can afford not to work unselfishly with all those that co-habit our fragile earth. Here is a 70's Si-Fi film that shows us the ultimate importance -of honesty and respect- that's vitally essential to help keep our modern world functioning when threatened by the possibility of a deadly pandemic. Not to forget Gil Melle's exciting electronic score. Nelson Gidding (Odds Against Tomorrow) adapts Michael Crichton's book to perfection, while award-nominated Richard Kline's vibrant cinematography gets knitted together perfectly, by Gilmore and Holmes editing. Direction as professional as the amazing Robert Wise has transformed many and varied styles of movies into cinematic greats, this is another. Science fiction probably has never been more realistically realized on screen - before or since ‘Andromeda'. The Andromeda Strain – Covid From Space in the 70s.
